2017 Sand Key Beach Tennis World Cup

sand key 2017 3The 2017 SSG International Beach Games was hosted by the Sheraton Sand Key Resort this past weekend which included Beach Tennis, Beach Ultimate, Beach Powerlifting, Scottish Heavy Athletics, Under 19 Super Weight Throw, and the Ultra Weight Pentathlon World Championships. Nearly 400 International athletes competed over the three day weekend from September 29 - October 1, 2017.

An added bonus of the SSG Beach Games Weekend was an opportunity for all hotel guests, spectators and Beach Games participants to try Archery Tag for free. Archery Tag is an intense, fast action competition like dodgeball with bows and arrows. Teams of five will play timed games to try and score the most points. Shoot your opponents, a target or catch an arrow to score points in this fun-filled combat archery game.

The 2017 Sand Key Beach Tennis World Cup, an IFBT competition was the cornerstone event offering $5000 which was distributed to Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medal winners in 5 divisions. 75 Beach Tennis professionals from all over the world competed over the three day weekend in the grueling Florida heat for their share of the prize money and coveted IFBT ranking points.

In the Men's Open Singles final Donny Young (USA) defeated Fernando Guevara (USA) 6-4. Eric Block (USA) and Craig Saunders (USA) tied for the Bronze Medal.

In the Women Open Singles final Stephanie Pereda (USA) defeated Nancy Howard (USA) 6-3. Angela Bemquerer defeated Tomiko Yamashita (USA) 6-0 for the Bronze Medal.

In the Men's Open Doubles final Jan Macko (USA)/Matteo Godio (ITA) defeated Donny Young (USA)/Riva Da Silva (USA) 7-3. Steve Culver (USA)/Rick Simeon (USA) defeated Max Gasparia (USA)/Gustavo Spadeveccia 6-3 for the Bronze Medal.

In the Women's Open Doubles final Marie Pier Huet (CAN)/Lady Correra (VEN) defeated Roos de Hart (USA)/Mayra Kaefer (USA) 6-2. Kim O'Keefe (USA)/Nahitza Macko (USA) defeated Gabriela Piacentini (USA)/Noi Torroella (USA) 6-5 (7-3) in a tie-breaker for the Bronze Medal.

In the Men's Over 40 Doubles final Donny Young (USA)/Eric Block (USA) defeater Juan Grandi (PRI)/Carlos Arniella (PRI) 7-1. Craig Saunders (USA)/Jeffrey Brennan (USA) defeated Marius Copos (USA)/Mario Castillo Chateau (MEX) 7-6 (7-3) in a tie-breaker for the Bronze Medal.

In the Women's Over 40 Doubles final Tomiko Yamashita (USA)/Junko Kishimoto (USA) defeated Nancy Howard (USA)/Amber Gilbert (USA) 7-2. Angela Bemquerer (USA)/Noi Torroella (USA) defeated Michelle Bos (USA)/Gabriella Folchi (USA) 6-0 for the Bronze Medal.

In the Mixed Open Doubles final Lady Correra (VEN)/Matteo Godio (ITA) defeated Marie Pier Huet (CAN)/Fernando Guevara (USA) 7-5. Roos de Hart (USA)/Donny Young (USA) defeated Nahitza Macko (USA)/Jan Macko (USA) 7-3 for the Bronze Medal.

All of the athletes that competed in the various events were treated to a complimentary buffet style banquet and a cash bar in the Sheraton's vast ballroom space on Saturday evening sponsored by the Clearwater/St. Petersburg Sports & Events and prepared by the Sheraton's own culinary staff. The banquet received rave reviews by all the athletes and the only complaint heard was that the party had to end!
