Great Participation in the European Championships Held in Sardinia

european2015The IFBT Beach Tennis European Championships were held for the second consecutive year at the Village 4 Mori Muravera, in the province of Cagliari. The 2015 tournament doubled in participation from the 2014 event and by its success it is evident it will continue to grow.

The players arrived at 4 Mori to compete in eight categories played between Friday and Sunday.The IFBT Global President, Giandomenico Bellettini said, "Many representatives participated including players from Italy, Catalonia, Portugal and Sardinia.

The players commented they enjoyed the IFBT formula in the qualifying rounds before moving on to the elimination rounds. We can say with confidence that the tournament was a great success and that we conquered Sardinia. The players of the island were enthusiastic about the event and are looking forward to next year's tournament. The 2016 IFBT Tour calendar will soon be posted and the 4 Mori, with its ideal setting, will host its 3rd annual European Championships in September. We want to thank Marco and Emanuele Tocchetti for the perfect tournament organization".

On Friday, the tournament began with 8 categories. Catalonia and Italy were expected dominate. In Men's Singles, Catalan Gerard Rodriguez defeated fellow Catalan Gerard Torres, and Ravenna's Nicholas Frontali and Portuguese Pedro Maio came in the third. In Women's Singles, however, the podium was entirely from Ravenna with Roberta Meardi in first, Simona Longhi second, and Susi Manegatti and Liana Scarmin in third. The Men's competitions were held in the afternoon, with male champions in first place being Affuso-Contu, and in third were Fabbri Cattaneo. Among women, the winners were Scarmin paired with the Portuguese Noro, second Meardi Manegatti, and third Longhi-De Marco. Saturday was dedicated to the Doubles categories. In the Men's Doubles, the champions were the Catalans Rodriguez-Torres, second the Catalans Peinado-Campillo third Vianello-Fabbri and Maio-Apolonia. In the Women's Doubles, Italians dominated the podium with gold going to Manegatti Longhi. Ravenna was also successful in the draw with amateurs Scarmin-De Marco defeating Meardi-Cabras. On Sunday, Mixed Doubles finals were Ravenna teams of Front-Scarmin who prevailed over De Marco and Filippo Tura. The latter, just sixteen years old, was the star up-and-coming player of the tournament having defeated strong players throughout the event. Vianello Manegatti won third place, while the Amateurs saw four Sardinia teams on the podium.

The Nations Cup was held on the final day of the European Championships, with Catalonia (Gael Rodriguez-Gerard Torres and Begona De Toro-Maria Enguix) defeating Portugal 2-0. In addition, the excellent program resrved time for players to spend time on a courts reserved for Polisportiva Olimpia, a non-profit organization that promotes sports as a means of social interaction. They brought their children with disabilities or suffering from Down syndrome to 4 Mori to spend a beautiful day and play beach tennis with the athletes of the IFBT European Championships.
