In paradise city of Santa Cruz Cabralia, Brazil, 190 athletes from seven countries fought last weekend for titles in Team Cup and world ranking points at Open Championship with US$ 1,500 prize money event. The tournament was held on Coroa Vermelha beach and beach tennis courts of Capitania´s Hotel.
The team competition was led by Brazil who won every category from Professional up to Under 18. With two teams, Brazil 2 defeated Chile in the semifinal and Brazil 1 beat Argentina in the other semifinal in Mixed Doubles. Brazil 2 with Antonio Vollmer and 20 years old talented Matheus Giovannino from Cabralia beat over Evando Rosindo and Alvaro Campanharo 9/6. But Brazil 2 managed to comeback wins the Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. In Women’s Doubles, Nathalia Costa, Queen of Rio de Janeiros beaches for four years and leaving in Florianopolis, and Santos player Maira Izzo beat Thais Schlobach, Brazilian number one, and Ana Maciel 9/7. In Mixed, confident Costa and Rosindo got over Schlobach and Mario Constanzi 9/1.
"It was incredible, a very nice feeling to comeback playing with this responsibility, and pressure to defend our country. I like pressure and I played every match in Women’s Doubles and Mixed. I need to thank the crowd that came and made some noise for us and helped", said Costa that came back in an official competition after eight months.
The Open competition finished with Brazilian, Chilean and Argentinian wins. In Women’s Doubles, Jesica Orselli and Aillian Wirth fought for the trophy beating Costa and Izzo by 6/2, 4/6, 10/6. Orselli won the Singles competition also and won Mixed Doubles Pro with Enzo Lafuente: "Where a beautiful experience. The IFBT Pan-American Championships in Cabralia. We could share our experiences with Amateur players and fight for wins for Argentinian team and also cheer for our players. I had a bad feeling losing the Mixed Doubles in team cup semifinal but we got our revenge winning on Mixed Pro competition and Women’s Doubles. We made a fantastic match every player playing their best on the court. We had a great time in Brazil, and they treated us very kindly", said Wirth.
The Chileans Rolly Cabezas and Felipe Guzman overcame the Brazilian duo Luis Pedreira and Luiz Basile 7/5 to capture the Over 40 title and Chile captured Beginner Amateur singles competition with Carolina Ximenes, Intermediary Men’s Doubles with Augustin Navarro and Silvio Suarez and Intermediary Singles with Jorge Castro.
"We were very proud to get 2nd place at Team Cup competition overall, it was our goal to fight for this place against Argentina. At Open championship we got some titles. In Brazil Beach Tennis is more popular and that´s why we are very happy with those results", said Jorge Castro, Chile IFBT member.
